The Jennings County Panthers hosted Class 3A No. 6 Shelbyville on Monday in the first meeting between the two programs in over a decade. After a strong first half, a big third quarter from Shelbyville proved to be the difference, as the Panthers fell 68-59. The first half was tightly contested between the two teams, as Jennings County’s inside-out offensive approach created quality scoring opportunities and their defensive intensity made things difficult for Shelbyville. The game was tied at 10 after the opening quarter and remained knotted up at 26 heading into halftime. Shelbyville found its rhythm coming out of the halftime break, forcing multiple Jennings County turnovers and converting them into easy points. A buzzer-beating three at the end of the third quarter gave the Golden Bears a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Panthers turned to the foul game for much of the fourth, but Shelbyville remained steady at the line, knocking down free throws to stay in control. A big quarter from Jerry Davis kept Jennings County within striking distance, but Shelbyville’s efficiency at the stripe sealed the 68-59 victory. The Panthers were led in scoring by Jerry Davis, who finished with 16 points. Omar Gonzalez also provided a spark off the bench, adding 12.
